Kids like fun foods. That’s one reason kids eat so much pasta even though most of it tastes the same. However, put a funny shaped noodle on one side of them and a long straight noodle on the other side and see which one your child picks up.
Antioxidant Food and Fun
Kids need antioxidants just as much as adults do. Free radicals damage their little cells in much the same way ours become damaged, through normal bodily functions such as metabolism. In the same way that antioxidants remove free radicals from our cells, the same goes for our children.
When making your antioxidant food choices for your children, think not only in terms of what is good for them but think what would be fun for them to eat. Most kids like fruits and vegetables which makes things easier but the key to antioxidant health is variety. That’s because there are many different kinds of antioxidants and as these perform different functions even in different parts of the cells, variety is important even when eating healthy.
Seeds and All
Perhaps you could let your kids be a part of their
antioxidant food choices, for example, choosing which berries to put on their cereal or choosing which fruits to juice today. Kids love to watch and to help in the juicing process and there is nothing healthier for them to drink than freshly squeezed juices. Consider the grape: Your child would never realize that the bulk of antioxidant value we get from the grape is in the seed. That’s why juicing is sometimes the best way to process certain foods.
Kids of all ages will be more cooperative when they get to be a part of their antioxidant food choices. They probably won’t know or care anything about antioxidants for years to come but they won’t mind eating and drinking what is good for them when they get to be a part of the fun and decision making.
By juicing you and your kids can make up wild flavors of juices that no one has ever heard of before and while they are giggling over the silly names they’ve dreamed up you can smile knowing that you have made wise antioxidant food choices for them. You can make smoothies and frozen pops with juices too and if you have the room to grow some of your own fruits or vegetables, the kids would love to be a part of that as well.
As any mother knows, it’s not always easy getting kids to do what is best for them. Most of the time we need all the help we can get. Instead of nagging them to put away the soda and drink juice, we can eliminate the soda and bring out the juicer. They’ll love it!
