Each year, Americans shell out nearly $2 billion dollars for antioxidant supplements.

The American Heart Association does not recommend the use of antioxidant supplements “until more complete data are in” but suggests instead that we get our antioxidants from food. For one thing, there are several different kinds of antioxidants that our bodies need to perform different functions. Supplements do not exactly replicate the antioxidants we consume with the food we eat and while we’re not going to get too many antioxidants in our diet, taking too many supplements could result in toxicity.
The supplements could also cause adverse reactions as they mix inside the body with prescription and over the counter medications. If you really believe you need an antioxidant supplement, be sure and talk with your doctor.
Some scientists believe that the regular use of antioxidant supplements interfere with the body’s own production of antioxidants.
The supplement craze has gone crazy as consumers spend billions and billions of dollars every year looking for the quick fix or as the case may be, trying to put the essential nutrients that they don’t take time to eat back into the body by way of the supplement. Advertisers tout all the benefits the antioxidants in our bodies provide and allude to the supplement doing the same thing.
The fact is by eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables along with the recommended daily values of other foods, we will have all the antioxidants and vitamins and minerals that our bodies need.
Check with your Physician First
There are times when supplements, including antioxidant supplements may be necessary. There are some medical conditions which block the absorption of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. However, this is the exception and not the rule as for most of us this does not apply. Often, this is the meaning behind the insistence of consumers consulting their physicians first before starting any such supplement program – the fact that some people do indeed need supplements including an antioxidant supplement.
It’s not hard to get caught up in the supplement craze with all the outlandish claims being made. However, on almost every bottle that contains a label touting all the wonderful things antioxidant supplements will do for you is a disclaimer admitting that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has not evaluated the product contained in the bottle.
That’s because the FDA regulates supplements not as drugs but as food and as such, they are forbidden to claim any such medical certainty. The manufacturers themselves are held to the standard that their product is safe but with no one in the consumer’s corner to evaluate the safety and truthfulness of the claim, we are left largely on our own to ferret out the undesirables. That’s another reason right there why we should check with our doctors before taking any kind of supplement.
The manufacturers of these “modern marvels” would like us to believe that if some is good, then a lot is better. That is simply not true. If someone you know is taking a large amount of supplements, insist on a thorough physical exam to rule out any physical problems and to evaluate if these supplements are truly necessary.
