Many of the fruits we enjoy are high in antioxidants and of them, blueberries are regarded as the best antioxidant in terms of antioxidant content. Just about every berry is rich in antioxidants: blackberries, strawberries, raspberries and cranberries. Wild blueberries contain more antioxidants than cultivated blueberries but they are both good choices. Red beans, pinto beans and kidney beans are also high on the best antioxidant list. So are many raw vegetables.

What about antioxidant supplements? As many of them that are out on the market are there any favorites? Confining research for this article to online sources, it is an education indeed to search for the best antioxidant supplements as most of the information on the subject comes from either proprietors of such sites that sell antioxidant supplements or the medical field who insist for the most part, that unless one has a medical condition or disease that prevents the absorption of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other vital nutrients, that supplements are not necessary.

Perhaps not. But for those who do take supplements on a regular basis, one of the favorite or best antioxidant supplements seems to be CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10). Now this is made in the body but as we age, our bodies make less of it. Some foods also contain a small amount of the enzyme.

Unfortunately, most of the online research relating to CoQ10 is sponsored by the very same people who are selling it and thus is not an objective study for the author’s purpose. They will tell you that it gives you more energy, protects you from congestive heart failure, Parkinson’s disease and a host of other maladies. By contrast, the MDA website seems to follow the prescribed objective opinion of professionals including doctors, pharmacists and scientists who advocate taking a supplement when there is a deficiency.

Fortunately, although CoQ10 can interfere with prescription medications, there are no known side effects to the supplement. That’s not the case with every supplement; some do have adverse or even toxic effects when taken to extreme. Actually, the best antioxidant supplement would be the one or more if needed, that is able to take up where the body leaves off, that is, where the body is deficient. We have been convinced that more is better but that is simply not true.

Actually, one of the most dangerous side effects of dietary supplements is the false sense of security one may feel when taking them. Security that tells individuals not to worry about watching their diet because they have everything they need in this little pill. That is dangerous thinking.

For those who do choose to take dietary supplements after consulting with their doctor, by its very definition the word supplement means, in addition to, not instead of. Even the best antioxidant supplements are no substitute for the real thing. For one thing, there are many different kinds of antioxidants contained in the food we eat and we need them all because different antioxidants serve different purposes. Can you determine with certainty that by foregoing your diet and taking supplements that you are getting all the necessary varieties?
