I like beans. Well, some of them anyway. I also like artichokes when they're mixed in with a spinach dip but these are just not foods I think of as fun. They're more like chore food, as in I should take out the trash but I'm not going to enjoy it.
Use Your Imagination
Now strawberries, they're fun food. I can eat them raw, make strawberry shortcake or have a romantic dinner or snack with strawberries and whip cream. I can dip them in chocolate or make a strawberry shake. If I'm watching calories, I'll leave out the ice cream and make a strawberry smoothie. Best thing about strawberries? They just happen to be on the top 20 list of foods rich in antioxidants.
That makes me happy. That makes my mother happy. She sends me antioxidant care packages. She cuts out articles about every food known to man that hints of having even one antioxidant in it. She knows I'll take a shot in the rear any day of the week before I'll put something in my mouth that doesn't taste good so she constantly looks for fun foods rich in antioxidants.
When USA Weekend came out with the article about chocolate being rich in antioxidants she emailed me the article and sent me a box of chocolates. "Look!" the handwritten note on the box said, "fun food rich in antioxidants. Enjoy!" When Prevention magazine came out with their article about dark chocolate having more antioxidants - you guessed it - another box of chocolates! She doesn't care if I get fat just as long as my cells are cleaned out.
That's what antioxidants do. They remove free radicals, which are left behind by metabolism and other normal bodily functions. The free radicals damage our cells and it is that damage that leads to cancer, heart disease and a host of other diseases.
Moderation is the Key
I told her, I said in my sternest daughter voice, "Mother, don't you know obesity leads to heart disease too?" You know what she said? "So eat a strawberry."
I guess I shouldn't complain about the chocolates or she'll send me dried beans with cooking instructions and antioxidant levels per bean. Then when I call her she'll ask, "Did you eat your beans today dear?" If I tell her about a new boyfriend, she doesn't ask what he does for a living, not my mother. She asks if he likes beans.
That's her favorite food rich in antioxidants. Beans. The only reason I'm even getting chocolate in the mail is because I moved away. Can you imagine if I lived in the same city? Three-bean salad, bean soup, ham and beans. And maybe if I was lucky strawberry shortcake for dessert. Only if I ate all my beans of course.
