Green Tea versus Black Tea
Green tea seems to be the tea of choice for people who are health conscious and particularly those who are concerned about their antioxidant intake. While green tea antioxidant levels are known to be higher than the antioxidant levels in black tea, they both come from the same plant. It’s all in the way they’re processed, which makes sense when you consider the nutritional value of a plain baked potato versus French fries.
The antioxidants in tea are called catechins. Interestingly enough, there are hardly any catechins in instant tea. Studies are not conclusive about whether or not it is the brewing process that produces the catechins that are found in green tea antioxidants.
There have been numerous studies conducted on the merits of green tea antioxidant healing powers. The results are as diverse as the studies themselves with some revealing healing powers and others reporting no change at all among the participants. Still green tea is a major player among the antioxidants on the market.
It must be remembered too that there are many different kinds of antioxidants and there doesn’t seem to be one kind more important than the others. In fact, it is the combined workings of several antioxidants that seem to produce the best results. Therefore when one does find a product of considerable antioxidant merit she is encouraged to consume that along with a balanced diet of all of the food groups while continuing to consume several servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
When the green tea antioxidant level is compared with the level of antioxidant in black tea
it is easy to see why green tea would be the preferred tea. Although studies of the benefits of disease fighting green tea antioxidants are often inconclusive, they have much more promising results when performed on laboratory animals perhaps, due to the controlled environment with the animals and by the same token, the uncontrolled environment surrounding the human subjects.
Still, the numbers are impressive and just the fact that antioxidants are desirous is enough for many people to embrace this liquid lifesaver of sorts. Add to that the barrage of life-enhancing “claims” made by the proprietors of such teas where people who read the long list of benefits afforded by drinking green tea antioxidants overlook the word “may” and become convinced that any claim of longevity and wellness be true.
Beware of False Claims
One such tea that sells through the MLM community and purports to “neutralize,” “aid,” “treat” and “cure” a long list of maladies is nothing more than a combination of herbs and spices which, when mixed together to form the tea, would convince anyone on the other end of the glass to spend the afternoon at home as it causes violent diarrhea yet this seems to be the intended affect to “rid the body of toxins.”
Only the individual can decide the remedies she finds helpful or conducive to overall health. Green tea on its own does seem to have impressive levels of antioxidants and while every claim cannot be proven we do know that antioxidants, including the green tea antioxidant are a positive solution to the cellular changes going on inside our bodies. Our duty, vast as it seems remains to weed out the chaff from the wheat.
